I mentioned in a previous post that I was going to get my hands on an Olympus OM-D E-M1, and I did thanks to a friendly representative I met at the DFW Photo Expo sponsored by Arlington Camera. I was asked to play with the camera for a couple of weeks to see how I liked it, what I didn’t like, and to just be honest with my opinion.
Now I am not coming from the perspective of someone who reviews cameras for a living so this is not going to be a scientific experiment about how it performs against full frame DSLRs with major stats listed. This perspective is that of a woman (in my age category–OK OK middle aged), with kids, who happens to be a photographer, and would be looking for a travel camera. I actually have been wanting a smaller travel camera to take on trips because it’s tough carrying my bigger equipment around and when we travel, which means taking a laptop with me so I can view and post my images if I want to —yes, I want to—while on vacation. 🙂
The Olympus OM-D E-M1 is a mirrorless, 16 megapixel camera that fits in the palm of my hand and uses interchangeable lenses. It feels like a point and shoot, but it works like my DSLR. It’s super fast, shooting 10 frames per second…cl,cl,cl,cl,cl,cl,cl,cl,cl,click!!
I found out just how fast last night at my daughter’s basketball game. (Click picture for larger view.)
It makes the most dreamy bokeh.
The clarity and depth of focus seem pretty wow.
The camera also seems to handle noise at very high ISO really well.
The colors are amazing. So clear.
All These are straight out of the camera. I shot JPG which I NEVER do. I always shoot RAW. However, to take advantage of one of my favorite I’m-aready-hooked features, you have to shoot some JPG. With this camera, you can shoot RAW, RAW+JPG, or just JPG…But the best feature for me so far aside from the fact that it is tiny and I can shoot manual all day long, is that I can upload to social media sites instantly, anytime, from anywhere using my smart phone. Hollah!
This is just a preview of the Olympus E-M1. I’ve only had it for a day and half. I think I’m in love. 🙂
